WEEK 1 Now that you've had a chance to yell at the Wordsmith, one thing is very clear. He wasn't lying. There's no escape from this place. You can explore all you like, but there aren't any ways to leave. It seems like there isn't much to do but settle in and get to know your fellow Apprentices. You're free to go wherever you'd like for the most part, but come 10PM the doors to the kitchen and the mail room will shut and lock and nothing you can do will get them to open. While you might be tempted to sleep in, you'll find that the clock in the foyer goes off every morning at 7AM and again in the evenings at 10PM without fail. You'll be able to hear it no matter where you are; it seems it's being broadcast over the PA system. You're welcome to go back to sleep after you hear it, but surely you don't want to spend the whole day in bed? (Unless you were out exploring all last night. In which case, go back to bed, damn.) [Adelina has been wandering the library for a while, hoping to find either useful information or a distraction. When she sees Hanyuu, though, she offers her a smile as she heads her way.]

Yes, please, I can't find where to start.

Well...

[A small pause, thinking to herself.]

What sort of story do you think you would enjoy hearing?

[oyashiromama]

[...Oh, well. that's...yeah, what kind?]

Oh... A happy one.

[bloodbiter]

A happy story... A true one, or a work of fiction?

[oyashiromama]

Fiction.

[bloodbiter]

[Fiction. She nods, committing that to memory.]

In looking over the titles earlier, I was unable to find anything I recognized from my home, but I'm certain we can find something to your liking together.

[Time to pull out random books and look at their covers?? What the heck is the Dewey decimal system.]

[What the heck is the Dewey decimal system indeed, alright let's do this, she pulls out one with...i don't know a night full of stars]

Are covers usually a good indicator of the story's content? I've only seem picture books start-to-back.

[She looks at the cover curiously, tilting her head slightly.]

I've never seen one that had a drawing on the cover before. Typically they only carry the book's title... How strange.

[It does have the title, this one being..............The Defect in Our Nebulas

It was common for them to have only the title where I come from too, but as time advanced illustrations became popular.

[bloodbiter]

How interesting. Is this one of those... photographs? Another young woman explained them to me.

[Technology is so weird. Help.]

It looks like it. A beautiful one too, aah, it reminds me of nights at home.

[she's just watched tech evolve she can't explain it]

[bloodbiter]

[A nod, a sentimental smile.]

If only we had windows here... It would be lovely to at least be able to see the sky.

Yes... We are rather closed in, aren't we? It's unfortunate.

[She very idly runs her fingers down the book's spine.]

[bloodbiter]

It is, yes.

[For more than just that reason, of course. Still, she shakes her head as if to clear it.]

I wonder if flipping through the pages would give you some idea as to the subject matter.

[Well, she does just that, taking a few flips through and...hm.

Hm.



Hm.

She puts the book back on the shelf.]

Stars don't necessarily mean happy.

[bloodbiter]

[A small laugh, pulling it out curiously once Hanyuu puts it back. She doesn't flip through it, though, just looks at it with interest.]

Why, what was it about?

[oyashiromama]

Sick teenagers. I'd...rather not read about something like that.

[...didn't Adelina's profile say something about...illness...?]

[bloodbiter]

[She falters for a moment, smile fading as she blinks, then turns to put the book back on the shelf without another word.

If her hand lingers on the shelf for a moment too long, as though held there by a memory, she doesn't acknowledge it. She turns back to Hanyuu, her expression back to normal.]

...It seems unpleasant. I understand why you don't want to read it.

[She realized a moment too late. This... She hasn't watched humanity for so long to miss the signs that someone's upset.

Asking or prying will do nothing. Leaving it be, nothing. Still... Still.]

Then...let's look until we find a happier one.

[She hasn't been able to influence anything for a thousand years. Maybe that can change.]

[bloodbiter]

[She's half tempted to say she's sorry or tell Hanyuu she's fine, but - that would be admitting there was a problem in the first place, and that's not true, not really.

So, she simply nods, putting forth a small smile.]

What do you typically enjoy reading about, Hanyuu?

[oyashiromama]

[She doesn't draw attention to Adelina's discomfort, and the perfect way to do so is explain her...complicated state of existence, isn't it?]

Well... When I was last living, the few things written were scrolls, and books were more of a...commodity for the courts. In the form I was in before this, I couldn't touch or interact with the physical world...so I've really only read bits and pieces over some of my villagers' shoulders.

[She says all this calmly, with smile of her own.]

I really don't know what I'd enjoying reading about. Maybe fairy tales, they sound nice.

[bloodbiter]

[It sounds awful, is the first thing she thinks, but she isn't certain if saying so would be disrespectful or rude in some way. She bites her tongue, but gives a nod.]

Fairy tales are a good place to start, I think.

[She glances around, though, realizing she has... no real idea where to find anything like that. Hello darkness her old friend.]

[It was awful. Everything about it, about her entire existence for the last thousand years has been awful.

But no matter.]

Now, let's see... [...you know, it's probably going to be randomly checking books throughout the library until they find the right section but at least fairy tales are things you'd know at first glance.]

[bloodbiter]

[Luckily for the both of them, they stumble across the correct section soon enough, and Adelina pulls a slim volume from the shelves. Pale Ivory and the Multiple Gnomes...]
