WEEK 1.

WEEK 1 Now that you've had a chance to yell at the Wordsmith, one thing is very clear. He wasn't lying. There's no escape from this place. You can explore all you like, but there aren't any ways to leave. It seems like there isn't much to do but settle in and get to know your fellow Apprentices. You're free to go wherever you'd like for the most part, but come 10PM the doors to the kitchen and the mail room will shut and lock and nothing you can do will get them to open. While you might be tempted to sleep in, you'll find that the clock in the foyer goes off every morning at 7AM and again in the evenings at 10PM without fail. You'll be able to hear it no matter where you are; it seems it's being broadcast over the PA system. You're welcome to go back to sleep after you hear it, but surely you don't want to spend the whole day in bed? (Unless you were out exploring all last night. In which case, go back to bed, damn.) Are there really that many books about animals?

There are books about just about everything.

[Phi just prefers hard sciences and the occasional science-fantasy.]

Really? Usually the stories we tell back home are just passed down as spoken word. I didn't know a lot of people actually wrote down their stories!

[ She thought it was just a weird Cocoon Thing. ]

Oral tradition is still alive and well wherever you're from?

[That's a touch more shocking than never having heard of photography.]

Yep! I mean, I know how to read and all, but it's way better to gather 'round a fire with family and tell stories.

I can't really say I prefer that.

[What with. Not having done it. Not for lack of fires, either...]

To each her own! I can see why you'd like books more, though... you can crack one open and read it whenever you'd like!

Well, as long as you carry it with you. And with no official checkout policy and a probable death awaiting if we break a rule, I'm not about to take chances.

[That sounded awfully blasé for death talk, though, didn't it?]

So should we keep all these books in here, do you think...?

If someone's taken something out of here, it's probably safe to, but for now I'd say yes.

[Phi's room is near the entrance to the foyer, so she missed a few people doing exactly that.]

Ehe... Better safe than sorry, then!

[ Maybe she should call up the Wordsmith to make sure... ]

Anyway, I don't think we've actually talked. My name's Phi.

[I mean, maybe she remembers from the profiles, but it's just not done.]

[ She pauses, tilting her head. ]

How've you been doing so far? Alright?

About as well as could be expected, really.

[It's. Not great. Not completely terrible, either, though.]

Mm, I know what you mean. But it seems to me everyone here is strong; if anyone can get out of this, it's us.

[plentyfriendly]

I think so too.

[And this time there's no Obvious Mole.]

[ She offers Phi one of those smiles and nods. ]

Yep! So if most of us think like that, we'll be unstoppable!

How long it might take would seem to be another thing entirely.

[We're already up to like two or three times the length of the Nonary Game: Ambidex Edition...]

Even if it takes a few weeks, it'll be worth it... But... I really hope it doesn't take that long.

So do I. I... kind of have something important to get back to.

[Not so important that she'd trade some random person's life for it, but... very important.]
