WEEK 2.

WEEK 2 Adelina and Kyrie Ushiromiya are dead. Regardless of how you felt about them and whether or not you mourned their passing, life goes on. It seems the Wordsmith intends to make good on the rules he's left for you all. Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; on Sunday morning the clock chimes as it always has, but at least there are no bodies to find today. It seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... Either way, it seems there's nothing to do but move on - or, perhaps, move down. Another door in that holding area near the elevator seems to have opened up, leading into a corridor and a stairwell that seems to lead you somewhere beneath the dormitories, and eventually onto a new floor altogether. Go ahead and explore all you like; after all, you did well at completing your lessons this past week. APPRENTICES REMAINING: 28

[Another day, another trip through the fairy tale section. Until she spots Christo, that is, doing something that is very much not reading.]

I didn't think anyone would be able to process words that fast. [she jokes, good god]

[They say humor is the first thing to go, so he's glad she still has it at her age?]

I'm only skimming. If I were reading for pleasure this would be a much slower process.

It must be something important you're searching for, if you're doing so at this speed.

I was hoping I might be able to find a description in one of these books of something that matched what we saw during the trial.

[They look like fiction, they're probably fiction, but if they're not completely fiction...]

[Hanyuu's expression turns a touch more serious now.]

That would.. If you could locate it, that would be a great help...but I assume you've had no luck so far?

None, but even going at this speed I'm not closed to finished.

[So he has hope, if only slight.]

Two sets of eyes can skim faster than one, isn't that so?

If you have the time, it certainly would speed things up.

[There are way too many books in here, and he thought he would never think that sentence.]

There's nothing in particular that I'm doing, no.

[So she'll grab a book and help look. ...With a little conversation here and there.]

Have you ever seen anything like it before? In the Netherlands?

I haven't, at least not personally. It has a superficial resemblance to shadow demons, but those generally keep a much more humanoid shape.

[At least, that's what he's heard. They don't show up in his installment of the series.]

Neither have I...though the elders always spoke of different dimensions with different sorts of creatures. If only I could remember everything they said...

[But a thousand years is a long time.]

Given that we already know we all come from different worlds, the odds that it's from somewhere none of us have ever heard of aren't insignificant. So materials found in this building could be the answer.

...I think this one isn't going to turn up anything unless it swerves into another genre halfway through.

[She can't help but smile a little.]

Not a story you'd expect to find an otherworldly horror in, is that so? ...Yes, this seems more traditionally fantastical as well.

This is a romance novel, and I have no desire to even briefly glimpse the words 'tumescent tube of fire' again in the hopes that it will somehow turn out to be useful.

[He's a little teensy bit red.]

Tumescent tu- o-oh...!! [And she goes red as well, with a small embarrassed chuckle.] Y-yes, I don't think you will be finding anything of use in that one.

Right, exactly, let's never speak of this again.

[He nearly shoves the book back on the shelf.]

[A small few moments of awkward silence, during which Hanyuu is intently skimming, even more than before.]

Would, aah... Would this creature really be something you think we can find in fiction?

[certaingiant]

Possibly. Consider... what's a good example of an earth animal... Elephants. Alright.

Elephants aren't fictional, of course. But most of the readership of any given novel has probably never seen one in the flesh, and so an author might be compelled to describe them. And if they also feel compelled to describe how to properly deal with elephants, that's even better for anyone who might hunt a real elephant one day.

...Haa... That may be true. Something in a story, a fiction, that isn't fiction.

[...Hm, she's got to thinking about something again and pauses in her skimming.]

It...will probably sound strange, but I really wish I could ask Kyrie something.

[certaingiant]

What would you ask?

[Even murderers have information, so he's not going to judge her for that much.]

...It's sort of personal, but...speaking like this, it's reminded me of it again.

When we first met...she said she'd heard of my village before, in a story. I brushed it off, because I didn't remember, but... The names she mentioned. I know them now.

[Fiction, reality - there's something to all of if that has her unnerved.]

[certaingiant]

I see, that is concerning. If you'd had the chance, maybe you could piece together how things connect...

[But now it's impossible to do something like that.]

[oyashiromama]

...But not now. [She sighs.] It's...unrelated to our current goal, so...you can put it out of your mind, Christo. Thank you for listening to my absentminded worries.

You don't have to thank me for something like that. It'll be detrimental to our escape if my valuable cohorts are stressing over unrelated things, so it's in my best interests to let them vent to someone.

[In other words, even helping someone out with their concerns is ultimately self-motivated.]
