[apparently, this is now happening?]

A man makes a deal with the devil Mephistopheles to find satisfaction in life. He meets a woman named Gretchen and falls in love; eventually, Faust experiences a single moment's happiness. Once he does, Mephistopheles attempts to claim his soul.

However, angels intervene on Faust's behalf, declaring he has striven endlessly as well as had the penitent Gretchen appeal to them for help. And instead of oblivion, at the end of his life Faust's soul is given up to Heaven.

That is, naturally, the shortest summary I can give.
