SHRIEKING SKULLS WILL SHOCK YOUR SOUL AND SEAL YOUR DOOM TONIGHT
[After 10:00 p.m., the library's... definitely a little different. The tables have lit candles on them, and there are... kind of janky cardboard cutouts set on some of the shelves. An attempt was made, at least, even if there could've been more boxes destroyed in the attempt...
But regardless. There's candles set around a place for some snacks if anyone wants to bring them, and there's also a blanket set on one of the tables. Because clearly, that's where the storyteller's supposed to sit...? Maybe you wanna do it. Maybe you just want to stand or sit or something.
Either way, let's get fucking spooky up in here.]

Vanille takes a seat next to her, and she won't deny she kinda might want one of those potatoes? It's fine. She'll deal. ]
How about... you go first!

are you ready for some BODY HORROR
[ Vanille shifts in her seat a little bit before she clears her throat. When she speaks, her voice is a little lower, serious, and her eyes are just a touch wider. ]
Back in Oerba, my village, we tell lots of stories. It's a tradition we all really love and take part in almost every night. Most of 'em are nice stories, but some of 'em are stories even the most hardened warrior shudders to tell...
Most of the critters on Gran Pulse are your normal beasties. Nasty teeth and claws, but nothing too scary. We usually do our hunting in the daylight, so we don't get caught unawares in the dark. But sometimes, there's a Pulsian who wanders too far away from the villages during the night. They might just be curious, or they might be still hungry for some reason; in the end, it doesn't really matter.
One night, a fellow Oerban ventured too far away from our village. No one noticed; he was that quiet. He took with him his trusty spear, and he made his way to the tunnels deep under Gran Pulse. Most of Gran Pulse is real nature-y, all green and full of life, but the tunnels that Atomos digs are far from that. It's dark and eerie down there, but as long as you're a capable fighter, it's not too much of a problem. Anyway, the young man ventured farther than anyone had before.
He reached the end of a tunnel. He was certain there was nothing else to find there... but suddenly, he heard a cry from somewhere to his right. To his surprise, he found a smaller tunnel, one that had not been dug out by the Fal'Cie Atomos.
He followed that smaller tunnel.
The noises got louder. They weren't human; they sounded wrong, like something out of a terrible nightmare. Yet he kept on walking, too curious to turn back. He walked and walked, until he heard a piercing scream behind him. When he turned, he saw it.
A monster. Its body was covered with hard, black, jagged crystal. It stood tall, despite the weight of the stones. It walked with a stagger, something no human could ever even dream of even attempting. Its stature was enough to make the warrior panic... But its face.
Its face was twisted in eternal torment and agony. It cried out for salvation, but the warrior was so petrified he could not deliver the last blow the creature so desired. With a cry, the warrior turned to the exit... Only to find more creatures. These, too, seemed to be trapped in their despair. Their cries for release echoed in his ears, and he pushed past their rocky bodies to run far, far away.
The warrior said, until his dying day, he had never once forgotten the screams of the Cie'th.
[ Vanille pauses. ]
And that's why no one goes into the tunnels below Gran Pulse.

Not seriously (this is anime), but yes, she is. ]
That's...that's so sad, Vanille-san! Those poor monsters!

Ah, d-don't cry, Orihime! It's alright, I'm sure they were fine in the end!
[ ... as in, they all probably died eventually. it's fine. ]

[ Sniff sniff ] I hope so...they just wanted to be free!
no subject
Yep. Lots of stories end sad, but this one's gotta have a good ending, after all that. No one would be that cruel, to just leave a creature like that to their suffering...

That's a terribly frightening thing to imagine! I certainly hope that was just a story...

Actually, I'm with him! [ Pointing her thumb at Gangrel ] Then no one in the village would know where he ended up, or maybe someone else could find bloody crystals!

If it were real, I wish I could've done something to ease their pain.

You're a kind soul.

Hehe. [ It... might be missing its usual enthusiasm, that laugh. ] I try my best.

...That's pretty sad. Why didn't he go back with a group to give them peace?

I guess it couldn't have been helped if he was too scared to. [ But still. ] It wouldn't be much of a scary story to keep people out of places they shouldn't be either if he did.

Makes for a good story, though.
