that's not what we usually mean by 'dance with death'
[That certainly did happen. Cherryblod's not the type of person who will judge one person's value as being more than another's, so he can't say whether it was better or worse than the first week. It came as less of a shock, maybe, but even so...
It's not the kind of thing people usually want to go through alone.
So, after he spends some time in the kitchen preparing (with assistance from Bruce), he'll slip some personalized notes under everyone's doors.]
[Name],
If you'd prefer to spend this time alone, that's fine.
If you'd prefer not to, I've made some food and set it out in the dining hall.
Even if you're just hungry and would rather not talk, feel free to come take some.
But if you'd like the company, we're here for you.

[Those arriving in the dining hall will find an assortment of food - a fair number of sandwiches and other, actual meal-like options since most people missed a meal or two, but also a goodly number of desserts. There's tea, as well as coffee for those who favor it.]

[He isn't making eye contact still, keeping his gaze focused on the photo instead; usually this is when the ego would come in, when he'd insist that he's good at pretty much everything else, but now isn't really the time.]
It's something monsters do back home. You're supposed to spread someone's dust on their favorite thing, but photographs work too, if you don't have any objects like that.
It's supposed to keep the person's essence alive.

I don't know if it happens in all worlds with humans, but in mine some people spread their loved ones' ashes in some sort of place full of nature. Forests, meaningful places, the sea...
I don't think it is to keep anyone's essence alive. It's more to give the dead and the mourners some peace.
[And others keep the ashes in jars to put them on the chimney. Mouri isn't sure if Mettaton would like hearing that, though]

...That sounds nice, actually.
[It really does, from the sound of it.]
Dust is really all we have once people die - there aren't any bodies or anything left behind. Sometimes we don't even know that someone's died, if someone does it when there's no one around.
Usually if someone is gone for long enough we can assume, but there isn't any closure that way. It's sad, I guess.
no subject
You guess.
[Emotions can't be that hard, even for a robot, right? Right?]
Why is there only dust left? I don't understand that yet. Is it like what happened to Pearl, the body disappearing if something is struck hard enough?
[That was...worded a bit too roughly than it should have been, but at least Mouri's tone should show there was no disrespect intended]
no subject
Well...monsters are made up entirely of their soul, sweetheart. Your body is made up largely of water; ours is made of magic, and our soul holds it together. Physically speaking, we're not very strong - I'm an exception, of course, but attacking us directly is attacking our soul as well as our body.
If our soul is damaged enough, we die; the soul itself disappears forever, the magic breaks apart, and dust is all that's left.
no subject
Wow, that is...
...
...that make sense. Is that why you felt the need to do a funeral? Did...this all remind you too much of what happens back at your home?
[Either that or Pearl and Mettaton were besties. Mouri hasn't seen them really interacting, though]

[And the usual bouncing enthusiasm that accompanies most of Mettaton's affirmative answers just isn't there; to borrow his cousin's way of wording it - "REALLY NOT FEELIN UP TO IT RIGHT NOW. SORRY."]
It's not as bad as it could have been. And it's not like I mind, or like attacking each other's souls is beneath us at all. It happens sometimes.
It's a little different when it's here, though, for some reason.
no subject
I suppose it is different because of the situation, being a group of strangers trapped in here and all that.
Do...do humans back at your home have souls too? Despite being made of water?
[It is good-natured curiosity, but if Mettaton tells him to stop asking stuff then he sure will, but somehow Mouri is kind of afraid to hear humans in Mettaton's world have no soul. That would sound so wrong he is not sure how he would react]
no subject
[And that's utterly confident; there's no question about it, really.]
They aren't as physically aware of them as we are, but their souls are actually a lot stronger than ours. One human's soul is said to be as powerful as all of the monsters' in the Underground.
no subject
I'm not sure if that is good or if that is terrible.
[How is he supposed to interpret that little snippet of information? After all, he has the impression there's a whole world of monsters where Mettaton lives. Thousands, if not millions, just like humans. For one soul to be as powerful as all them really is mindboggling]
no subject
I mean, it's not as though we can't fight back at all, but it's going to be a losing fight in most circumstances.
no subject
[It isn't like there will be a war or anything like that. As if something like that could ever happen]
no subject
no subject
Huh. Well people here are at least getting along with you, although that may be because you do resemble a human and because, hmmm...
...because it seems many of us aren't really humans despite looking like one? I actually feel I may be the only one who is a completely normal human.
no subject
And can we really be so sure about you, darling? For all we know, you're hiding some sort of really impressive ability of your own.
[It's teasing, though, fairly gentle at that.]
no subject
[Mouri is not a humble man. He would have bragged about any impressive abilities to half of the Vault by now. Truly the only thing he can talk about is his detective skills - how many detectives can say they have so many cases flawlessly solved - but he still has the feeling it wouldn't be believed by most.
That's why he's only telling detective stuff to those he thinks are willing to accept such bragging]
no subject
[God, this is actually putting him in a far better mood since the...everything today has decided to be. God bless you right now, Mouri, seriously.]

Only the best people know exactly who they are and what they are capable of.
[...which doesn't completely fit himself but who cares]
I have no doubt you know yourself very well too. Anyone who doubts that just hasn't talked to you enough.
no subject
Well, of course, sweetheart - I've always been the sort to know what I want for myself.
It's things like that that set us apart, right?
