romance and murder go so well together
[ If the colorful posters from Tuesday weren't enough, Yato has redoubled his efforts for today and slapped these up all over the place:

We are admittedly not entirely sure what the heck the catgirl is there for, but she's there. Anyway, in the dining hall this evening, Aqua and Yato have set things up for a group dinner!! All the food is being put on one table; the rest of the room is for mingling and is colorfully decorated in a way that suggests that Yato went wild in the art room at some point and decided what we all really need in our lives is more color and more glitter!!
There's also this piece of paper with everybody's names on it in pairs, and sets of questions (red tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet). That's right, your mystery game is speed-dating and Yato is here to be your cupid for the evening!! ]

[He's...not entirely sure what's meant by that; he doesn't date, and he doesn't quite see how one could decide they want to date someone based on three questions.]
It's just another interview, as far as I'm concerned! I can't really be attached to anyone anyway - it's against idol code.
no subject
Really? No plans at all to have a special someone at some point in the future?
[CAN ROBOTS HAVE ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS that is his current thought now. Stupid Mettaton and its intriguing existence]
no subject
[well, that was blunt- ]
My true love is the spotlight - why would I ever want to give that up to be tied down to someone else? My career is all I need, and besides, if I start dating anyone then I'm no longer available for people to project their fantasies onto! It'll damage my popularity, and I can't stand to see that happen.
All of my happiness comes from my job and my actions - why should I bother looking elsewhere for it? I'm doing great, baby, and I don't need anyone else.
[...holy shit, Mettaton, really.]

...the detective can only suppose Alphys never programmed him to have romantic feelings. That must be it]
That's what works for you and that is fine. I can't say 'the spotlight' is enough for me. I mean, I'm pretty famous back at home - that's what my dreams tell me and I'm not surprised - but it just isn't enough.
...I don't really expect you to understand, but a lot of people are like that. Being alone...that is something many can't endure.
[Mouri included. Damn he does know that yet he can't really take any steps to correct it. The one time he did try to fix his relationship she didn't even listen.
At least that's what he knows]

[...And, well. A few that aren't anymore.]
Maybe I'll change my mind one day. It's possible! And I used to like someone back where I grew up, a little. Nothing too intense, but it was a thought sometimes.
But my dreams were more important to me in the end, and I don't regret that. That's all.
no subject
..."like someone back where I grew up?"
[Hohoh! That is something curious. Mouri latches onto that]
Where did you grow up?
no subject
It was a place called Waterfall. It's not where I'm working now, but it's nearby. I lived there with my cousins for a while.
It's pretty! But it's not to my liking. I've only really gone back once since I left.
no subject
[Cousins...for the robot. A thought starts forming in Mouri's head. Yes, maybe he is one step closer to cracking the problem that is Mettaton]

[This could be his chance]
Any of them is fine. Tell me about the one you like the most, I suppose. How was it growing up with them? What's your earliest memory with them?
[That is technically two questions, but as far as he can see it is the best he can ask]
no subject
[There's not much question about it in his mind, it's just working out what to actually...say about them...]
Well, they're an absolute sweetheart, really. Very kind to everyone, even if they don't have a reason to be! They're also a little shy - they prefer supporting people in ways that they know how, instead of having any of the spotlight themselves. And their self-esteem is really bad for some reason - they're really great, so it shouldn't be, but it is. So I spent a lot of time cheering them up and encouraging them.
They like music, like I do, but they're good at making remixes of things. One of my earliest memories of them is probably both of us meeting someone who would become a friend of ours later!
[Hmmm.]
They were always closest to me - the other two I remember were closer to each other than us. It's just how things worked out, I guess!

Mouri leans on the wall, smirking like he always did when he feels he had a particularly brilliant idea]
I see! You really like them, I can see that. I have one last question, if you don't mind answering it.
These cousins of yours...are they robots too?
no subject
[HE SAYS, WITH UTMOST CONFIDENCE, LIKE THAT ISN'T AT ALL FUCKING WEIRD.]
no subject
For a long while I have been wondering about you. I felt there was something I wasn't seeing yet, something I didn't understand, but now! I can see the truth! There's no truth that can stay hidden from the great detective Kogoro Mouri!
[Well he sure got into the role he had in his head. Mouri points dramatically, this is his show and he is the star. Good thing he has practice on that, product of his fame. At least he has the decency not to make a scene, everything is said with a normal level of voice]
Your life, the cousins, the strange feeling there's more of a story other than the Alphys-san, it all comes together. Mettaton-san! You are not a robot, are you? No, you are something different. You are a vessel!
The only thing created in a laboratory was your body. Your personality, your identity, everything that makes you the person you are, it is not something Alphys-san created.
[There! Jackpot! But then...he kept going]
She imbued a robot body with the memories of somebody who is now deceased. I don't know the exact circumstances, but my personal theory is that at the moment of the death she managed to save the mind of the deceased monster, giving it new life through a robot body.
[Not so sketchy, it is decent. If Mouri stops now he can be proud of himse-]
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if somehow it wasn't a monster life at all! If it was actually a human life what was saved that would explain why you were given an humanoid body, because that's the closest you could be to being back alive again!
[...now that is a stretch. Mouri doesn't see it as such, though, he's still smirking]
That is all the truth I now see. Am I right?
no subject
Just...give him a moment to process that before you get the most enthusiastic and utterly brief round of applause from him.]
So close! You came so close, darling - but in a tragic turn of events, you snatched defeat from the jaws of victory!
You were on the right track! But in the end, that's not it.
no subject
[Well he is deflating. The show is over]
W-What could I get wrong?! I was completely sure I had solved it...
no subject
One, I'm not a dead person. Not now, and not ever.
And two, I've been telling the truth when I say that I'm not human. I never have been, either.
no subject
[He's stuck]
Damn iiiiit. This isn't as simple as I thought it was. There's something I'm missing here, damn it!
[He does notice Mettaton doesn't protest to the vessel part, though. There's some comfort on knowing he got that right, but if he doesn't know exactly what Mettaton contains then he may as well know nothing. Oh well.
He tried]
I'll have to think more about it later.
