Week 5.

WEEK 5 Three more have joined the deceased this past week. Taichi Yagami was punished for breaking a rule, Megumi Sakura was killed, and Norman Bates... well, the less said about Norman, the better. A third of you are dead now; your losses are becoming more and more evident with each passing week. Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; there aren't any bodies to be found on Sunday morning. But that doesn't mean the night was uneventful - it seems something else may have brought you some newfound clarity. Or perhaps not... Once again, that spiral staircase leads farther than you remember, clear up to a previously inaccessible fifth floor. And it's nothing. It's the least I can do, after... everything.

[All of them had died not because they were bad or anything - they were all victims of the Kingmaker's game. And that's... something to keep in mind, no matter what happens.]

Yeah. There's so little time here to really do anything. Always gotta move on to the next thing so quick...

[Everything just keeps happening one after another, sometimes its hard to keep it all together.]

But we'll do our best to remember them. [Remember them for who they were, and not what they did.]

Y'know, I thought those things in the pit were just copies. Somethin' he made up to fuck with us. I guess that could still be true, but that last one...

[Megumi looked so sad. The way he imagines she would have for real, if she'd been able to come back and see all that. Wouldn't a mockery of her have been...colder, or something?

Maybe not. The tears did seem to fuck with Norman.]

[...yeah, Bruce had been thinking about that as well. The previous ones had all been cold, or methodical, or outright insane, but this one was...

Watching that was... [He pauses for a moment.] It felt--wrong.

[She shouldn't have had to do that. That's what he wants to say; he's just not sure if it was her at all.]

I could see it outta the other three. It's not like they didn't have good reason to be mad! But..I don't think she'dve wanted that. Even after what happened.

...I don't think she would have wanted it, too.

[Just... everything about her, what he knew and the times they talked... no, she wouldn't do that. He couldn't see that from her.]

It really doesn't make the whole thing any better.

It's just insult to injury. She'd be upset if she knew.

[Would he be upset? Stan can't think that it would make a difference to him either way. Dead's dead, and he can't imagine he'd mind his killer dying.]

Tell ya what, if I get killed and brought back as some kinda revenge zombie, I'll try to shoot you guys some kinda signal.

[There's a small snort from Bruce at that.]

I'm sure we'll appreciate that.

[...though really, please don't die, Stan. Bruce wouldn't like it.]

No, seriously! I'll wink or somethin'! Or...no, he'd notice that.

[Plus the zombies must be controlled somehow. Megumi wouldn't have stabbed Norman.]

Tell ya what, I'll give 'em the finger before I do whatever fucked-up shit I'm gonna do.

...I'm sure he won't think about flipping the bird.

[That does seem a bit too out there, considering everything else. So Stan's good to go on that part.

...although yeah, Bruce still hopes that doesn't happen.]

'Course not! It's brilliant!

...I mean, obviously I'd rather not end up there at all. But I might as well try doin' somethin' useful if I'm gonna go. I can fight fine, but all it takes is one good surprise.

[...yeah, Stan's age is probably going to work against him here, since he is old in normal human ages.]

I don't think any of us want to end up there. [Bruce himself especially. Although probably not for the conventional reasons.]

Nah. But at this point, seems like it can't hurt to plan.

[You can't bet only on yourself forever.]

[A brief pause here. And then, a soft sigh.]

...I suppose so.

[Bruce doesn't want to think about it though. If he's down there as one of the dead ones...

It's not that he fears death - its hard to fear something that has already clearly rejected you once. But what the Kingmaker does after that... that is what he fears more than the possibility of him dying.]

[Stan looks sideways at Bruce for a moment. Right, yeah, people confronting their own mortality.]

...ah, don't sweat it. Odds are I'll die before you anyway.

[amygdalae]

[...and somehow Bruce just gives a really wry smile here, looking like he's laughing at himself for some cruel joke that Stan isn't in on.]

Maybe. It's hard to tell.

[Ha. Hahaha.]

You'd better not die first, or I'll be pissed.

...I've been told that me dying will be hindering everyone here.

[...so yes, he won't die, if only because that means it won't benefit the rest of them. He'll do his best to stay alive for as long as he's still useful.]

[Just keeping in mind that people are somehow depending on him, for some reason he still can't understand. It's hard to wrap his head around the fact that anybody even wants to depend on him at all.]
