It has been subtle. Several posters may have appeared during the week. They don't have any cat drawings or even fancy typography, in fact, they are not even large! It's forgivable you may have missed them.

The text in them is concise enough.

It only took like five weeks before it finally happened.

The dojo is prepared for the event. The mats has been distributed until they covered most of the area. A few chairs have been taken from rooms downstairs and placed for anyone who comes.

All the way to the front there is Kogoro Mouri, dressed in an absolutely horrid neon yellow jumpsuit. It is better than fighting in a suit, at least. Yosuke Hanamura is there too, as Mouri's assistant for the class.

The general objective is not to turn people into competent fighters, because that'd be impossible. What Mouri wants is at least give an idea of what they could do, shown through very basic concepts. That should be good for something, right?

Good morning, everyone. I'm Kogoro Mouri and I'll be the instructor today.

[Everyone knows who you are, detective. Mouri gestures towards Yosuke]

This is my assistant, Hanamura-kun. Together we shall make demonstrations of different situations and what options you have to defend yourself. Since we are in a...problematic environment I believe this could increase your chances of surviving.

I don't promise to make you experts, but I do hope what you see helps you if you're ever attacked.

If you have any questions during the lessons please ask them. I'm here to teach, after all.

The most basic concept in self-defense could be defined as using your opponent's strengths in your advantage. For the purposes of this class I have recruited Hanamura-kun, who will try his best to attack me in many situations.

He is nimble and quick, somebody to fear! It'd be a problem if he wanted to hurt anyone. There are many weapons that could be used, and situations that could arise.

Let's start with the scenario with the most chances of survival: being attacked while the opponent has no concrete weapon. What you see here will be the most basic stuff, what you need to keep in mind in any situation.

Suppose Hanamura-kun was talking with you when you accidentally pushed his buttons and enraged him. He is in front of you ready to attack. Do it, Hanamura-kun!

[Mouri tenses, ready for Yosuke to move towards him and try to attack]

Huh? Oh!

[He tries to look pissed and scary! ...it's not very intimidating, BUT when he loves to attack there is some real effort there- he charges, moving like he was going to slug Mouri]

[Yosuke, you are not very good at looking scary. Still, what matter is to be STRONG AND ANGRY. In other words, imagine you are the Hulk.

A quite common attack, Mouri approves. He moves, blocking any attempted punch with his arm. Don't stop moving, Yosuke! At least Mouri can talk while defending himself]

The arms are essential to block fists and the upper limbs! The objective is not to hurt your opponent, it is to make them be unable to attack you further.

Think fast and look for an opening to subdue your opponent!

[Here we go! Mouri waits for Yosuke to rear back even an inch and shoots his arm to try to grab Yosuke's shoulder. The intention is to push Yosuke to attempt to unbalance him and then grab his clothes, pulling towards Mouri so he can force Yosuke to fall onto the floor.

At least there are mats, so the most Yosuke will suffer is being winded. Pretty inoffensive, at least]

[It's not hard to do- while Yosuke is fast and agile, his balance is always on a thin wire. Considering how often he's almost fallen off things, it's not a shock when Mouri unbalances him easily, tossing him with an 'Oof' to the mat.

He laughs a little breathlessly]

There's no mats on the REAL floor though.

That is right, Hanamura-kun!

[To everyone else:]

Being thrown onto the floor without mats is at least going to cause bruises, and it will give you time to run away. Remember your objective is to dissuade your opponent from fighting back or letting you run away. As soon as you make your opponent fall or disarm them, I recommend you don't stick around. Get to a safe place.

[Here, let Mouri help you stand, kid] You are doing well, kid. Keep it up.

As you may imagine, it is possible you won't have a frontal attack. For all you know Hanamura-kun is pissed off but hides it, instead planning to ambush you later.

[Mouri turns his back to Yosuke and walks away a bit]

Let's try to deal with when you can't see your opponent and they catch you by surprise. Acting quickly is essential, so stay alert at all times. This is going to require a bit more of technique, but it can be done by anyone if you move correctly. Attack me, Hanamura-kun!

[Be as creative as you wish! Your target is unaware you are coming, go ahead!]

[Yosuke ponders for a second..., then literally launches himself at Mouri's back- hope your ready for his scrawny weight, bro]

[Pffft. Some people wouldn't notice you latching onto them, young man.

Mouri freezes in disbelief. Just...wow, that was one terrible decision, Yosuke]

Uuuh...well that was your choice.

[This is not what Mouri would do, but since he doesn't want to hurt Yosuke...

...Mouri impulses himself backwards, falling down, intending to use gravity and Mouri's impulse to press all his weight on the assistant. Hope you were ready for his not-so-scrawny weight, bro.

Mouri stands up immediately]

Uh, if somebody latches like that against you usually what I'd do would be to back off against any solid surfaces to smash the attacker against the walls or something. Please don't actually throw yourself onto the floor, that could give your opponent an advantage.

Depending of where the attacker latches onto you you could also throw them onto your shoulder, by moving as if you were going to crouch and sliding the foe over your shoulder. It is easier to do than it sounds, all you need is to keep your balance and unbalance your opponent.

[You alright, Yosuke? Mouri whispers to him:]

Hey, are you good with any kind of weapon?

Mouri passes Yosuke a short wooden rod he conveniently prepared. He actually has several things to simulate weapons, for anything Yosuke could have said]

Here. Pretend it is a knife.

Listen, everyone! Unfortunately we are in a place where murder can happen. If somebody has intentions to kill then it is likely they have prepared a weapon.

For example, Hanamura-kun has acquired a knife somewhere and he is ready to attack. This is a life-threatening situation, but it is important not to panic.

You will have only a few seconds to react! The most important part is to deflect the weapon, even if it may lead to a minor wound.

Do your best, Hanamura-kun!

[Since Yosuke said he is good with knives Mouri isn't sure what to expect. What kind of underhanded techniques could Yosuke know? To be frank, Mouri is a bit nervous]

[He IS kinda tempted to do something sneaky- like throwing the 'knife' or trying to feint his way around Mouri. But that kinda ruins the reason they are here. But he DOES come in low and fast like a mongoose coming in for a strike.

Mouri better be right about having only the barest moments to react, cuz Yosuke is barely giving him THAT]

[Well that was certainly very impressive! Mouri did know Yosuke was quick and good when moving, but he didn't expect him to be that quick.

Yosuke's attack is so quick Mouri just forgets what this is supposed to be. His instinct takes over. He barely is able to jump back, just enough to avoid the strike. It was coming so quick his plan to disarm Yosuke would have failed, so he is forced to change plans.

The detective is pretty damn good at judo because he knows to use the opponent's strengths against them. Yosuke's speed also means quite a lot of impulse, which Mouri tries to use for his advantage, trying to grab the back of Yosuke's clothes, lifting the teenager in the air, ready to end the attack by actually using that same impulse to smash Yosuke against the mats, at the other side. It was actually a pretty difficult maneuver and would require a lot of practice to perform, not at all what Mouri had intended to show.

The problem is that Yosuke isn't an opponent in judo. He has his own advantages as well, and chances are he'll be able to use them]

[He yelps when Mouri lifts him, the world tilting. But he's been hit by magic and tossed around a lot before, so while he can't stop what's happening, his sense of where Mouri is located is still mostly intact in those split moments.

So while he's being slammed he adjusts his hold on his 'knife' and throws it- aiming for the detective's core. Maaaybe he got a little too into it.]

[They both got a little too into this. That is what happens when both people are so good at fighting.

While the maneuver Mouri used could be done with only one hand - and he did, lifting Yosuke was quite easy - the other one was mostly for his own balance. That's why he is defenseless against Yosuke's 'knife'. It actually impacts against him.

Mouri freezes in surprise, looking at the 'knife' as it fell to the mats. It takes him a moment to process everything that had happened, what he had done, where he was...

AHEM YOU SAW NOTHING EVERYONE what to say what to say]

Uuuuh...if this had been a real fight we both would have been...very hurt. Me, mostly. This isn't what...I thought would happen.

[But it wasn't a bad show, at least?]

Hm, first than all, please don't do what I just did. You need a lot of strength to lift anyone without losing your balance, and the foe can suffer severe impacts against their back and shoulder blades if this is done against the floor. We are not in condition to treat something like a broken back.

Second, remember these are not infallible techniques. Your opponent could have their own tricks and skills and they can use them anytime. You just saw it.

T-The intention of the demonstration was to show how to disarm your opponent...I was going to use my arms to hit Hanamura-kun's arm and take the chance to subdue him right after that.

Hanamura-kun, you are way better fighting than I thought.

Think you can give a try to subduing me? So people see it isn't necessary to be bigger or stronger than the attacker to defend yourself?

[He feels a little bad- he was here to be a dummy, after all. But once they started going he just defaulted to what he knew. He's bright red, fumbling to his feet and rubbing the back of his head]

[After a short rest because hey, both surely would need it, Mouri directs his attention to the bystanders]

Maybe you could have thought being bigger or stronger than your opponent is the key to defending yourself. That is not true. What you need is to know what you're capable of and be able to use it against the attacker.

To showcase the lesson the roles will be reversed. Hanamura-kun will defend and I will attack. I have no control of what they may do, but it is okay. I'll be able to interpret something from his actions and tell you what this was all about.

[Mouri at least plans to go easy on Yosuke. He did just find out Yosuke is good but better to not to go overboard. Mouri stands away and turns to his assistant]

Prepare yourself and tell me when you feel ready.

[At the end of the lessons Mouri gives everyone space in case they want to pair and spar between each other. Or discuss how badly they fight, whatever they want. It is a class, after all!

He agreed to this without coercion, so it's fine. Yosuke can handle himself.

You are right. He is pretty good! I think if there's anyone who doesn't have to be afraid of anything it is him.

[Mouri's respect for Yosuke has gone up a lot during the demonstrations, it seems]

[He may twirl spanners around like a show-off, but he can hold his own in a real fight.]

I'm glad you agree with me on that.

[ Aiden pretty much came to watch, as he doesn't need any lessons. It was always useful though to see what fighting styles other people possessed and this was no exception.]

If anyone would like to learn evasive maneuvers, I'd be more than happy to teach what I know.

If we're looking to prevent any more murders, I'd say it's an excellent move to be quick on your feet.

[The lessons aren't too bad, and Mouri looks to know what he's talking about. Mostly. They're practical and good enough, though Sigrun won't be giving out any lessons herself; she seems to be satisfied with just watching what's going on with a wide grin.

... Half of that is because she's watching a pretty swell fight, yes. The leaning from one foot to the next might be a tell for the other, how much she wants to give a go at someone herself.]

[ Aiden too, came for the same reason. He can't help but notice how much Sigrun's getting into it and comments:]

I so am! Think I'll take a space for myself and see if there's anyone brave enough to go against Sigrun the Great, though I don't know who to begin with. I still have to spar with shrimpy and the robot after all! Sometime.

[She wants to be at her best when she takes them on, honestly.]

We can do hand-to-hand. I don't think they'd appreciate it [ Throwing a glance at Mouri and Yosuke--] if we used actual weapons here.

That's because they're teaching basics. The kid and I went at each other with knives for first blood earlier this week, it was fun.

[She still has the knives on her too, somewhere. She's started to carry them around. As a comfort.]

I'd hope that they'd introduce real weapons later on though, there's a huge difference in knowing how to move with and against one. Right? You'd agree, right?

Did you? [ That's interesting to know.]

There is. But you have to start somewhere. [ Cynically he doesn't think that these self-defense tactics will amount to much, not against someone with actual training.]

[Thankfully, that number of actual training is dwindling down. So this is helpful in some regard.]
