WEEK 4 Three more have died this past week. Milla Maxwell was killed for breaking a rule, Chiyuki was murdered, and you all had a hand in executing Yoshikage Kira. It seems like this isn't going to stop any time soon. How many more will join them this week? Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; on Sunday morning the clock chimes as it always has, but at least there are no bodies to find today. It seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... Despite the Wordsmith's reaction to the last trial, it seems as though you've been rewarded once again for a job that was...well, it was done, even if he didn't explicitly say it was well-done. Another door has opened in that stairway, it seems, leading you further down into the building; once again, there are more rooms down there, more things to occupy yourselves with. Or perhaps just more means to get creative with regards to how you take initiative with your fellow Apprentices. APPRENTICES REMAINING: 23 APPRENTICES REMAINING: 22 APPRENTICES REMAINING: 20

Gems have their purpose in the Order. Jaspers are simply not meant to have time to themselves like this.

You are...one of many? And your job doesn't allow for free time?

This is the first time you've ever had to explore this side of yourself, isn't it?

My facet is uniquely me, but... I am not the only Jasper, no.

[She's silent for a long time.]

I have never had to do so much... thinking, without direct guidance from the Diamonds before.

...I can relate, in a way.

[It's...surprising, to say this-]

The name on the wall...none of those is...a personal name for me. Before I received the name "Hanyuu," I spent my days just...doing my duty, and nothing else.

[iaspis]

I... I am glad that you can relate. It's... not something I thought anyone here would know anything about.

It's... different now, here, isn't it?

It is. [She turns over a card. No luck at filling the foundation piles.] ...I... There was a time when I learned a lot like you are here. About myself, about the world. It...came to an end, and I ascended, but... I was then, I think, without realizing it, bound to another duty. Now, it's like...discovering all over again.

[She looks at Jasper.]

I hadn't expected to meet one such as you either. Can you tell me about it? ...Being a Gem, and the differences here.

[iaspis]

[She's quiet for a long time.]

Every Gem is created for a purpose. A Ruby is a foot soldier; a Pearl is a loyal servant for a high-ranking Gem. We are grown for a purpose, and that purpose is never meant to be changed.

In all the years after the rebellion was quashed, I was fine with that purpose.

But now.... I don't know. I've spent time with organic beings who do not have an inherent purpose, who have created their own purpose....

[oyashiromama]

That's what most people do. Most of them...find their own way through life, or...if their purpose is taken from them, or changed, have to struggle to develop a new one. ...I find it enviable, honestly. That freedom.

[iaspis]

I think I understand why Homeworld doesn't like it, now.

More Gems would question it, if they found out.

[oyashiromama]

And...what do you think? Do you question it?

[iaspis]

.....Yes.

There's no way I could return to serving Homeworld, now.

[oyashiromama]

I have no easy answers of what to do moving forward, but, I... As someone...who questioned her own elders, I want you to know that I'm proud of you, no matter how confusing or difficult this is.

[iaspis]

It's.... been a long time.

I wonder if this is what Rose Quartz felt.

Rose Quartz? She's...among your information, isn't she?

[iaspis]

...Yes. She was the leader of the Rebellion, who fought against Homeworld.

[oyashiromama]

[Was.]

You liked her but didn't... Do you think this is why?

[iaspis]

I respected her tactics in battle. I can admit that.

[....]

But I never thought I'd understand why she did it in the first place.

[oyashiromama]

It would be...best, if you could explore this without the worry and stress of this place on your shoulders. I'm sorry that you aren't able to, but...learning to understand someone you previously opposed...that's a good thing, Jasper.

[iaspis]

If I could speak to her now... to the remnants of her army...

I would tell her I understand, now. I could not join them. But I understand.

I think, that is more than good enough.
