WEEK 4.

WEEK 4 Three more have died this past week. Milla Maxwell was killed for breaking a rule, Chiyuki was murdered, and you all had a hand in executing Yoshikage Kira. It seems like this isn't going to stop any time soon. How many more will join them this week? Saturday is given to regrouping and rest; on Sunday morning the clock chimes as it always has, but at least there are no bodies to find today. It seems you're safe for now. The night before wasn't necessarily a peaceful one, however; you'll probably feel a bit groggy when you wake up, and it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... Despite the Wordsmith's reaction to the last trial, it seems as though you've been rewarded once again for a job that was...well, it was done, even if he didn't explicitly say it was well-done. Another door has opened in that stairway, it seems, leading you further down into the building; once again, there are more rooms down there, more things to occupy yourselves with. Or perhaps just more means to get creative with regards to how you take initiative with your fellow Apprentices. APPRENTICES REMAINING: 23 APPRENTICES REMAINING: 22 APPRENTICES REMAINING: 20

[...Such a big family. Hanyuu- ...she hates that jealousy, piling up again, so she squashes it down. Elda lost her husband. There's nothing to be jealous of. She just wishes...

Hanyuu can't quite smile, but she touches the drawing, gently.] What's the newest little one's name?

[matchbreaker]

Anju. [ She smiles, despite how the name is a little strange on her lips ] My son and his wife are keeping the old family name, but it seems they decided to give their children more Japanese names so that they might adapt to the new environment. Anju and Karin are even going by "Maaka Karin" and "Maaka Anju" in school.

[ She's eager to talk about herself, and this subject. She's... incredibly thankful for this life. ]

[oyashiromama]

Aah... [It fills her with this warmth in her stomach.] That should help them so much. They can try to fit in.

...I'm very glad you have so much to go back to, Elda.

[matchbreaker]

I do. I really do.

[ And she's do glad. But she... she reaches her hands out now, to try and take Hanyuu's in her own. ]

Hanyuu, you really should come with me.

[oyashiromama]

[...Ah. Hanyuu's still.]

I... I told you before, Elda. I can't.

[matchbreaker]

I know but... [ she's still smiling, she can't help it. She knows her friend is distressed, but... well. ] I mean, a ghost might as well be somewhere happy. And- and Anju! She's actually amazing with ghosts. She's got tons of them in her dolls. You could have a body!

[oyashiromama]

[...that is... She does worry about not having her own, out of here, but-]

I can't, I-I have people I have to look after.

[matchbreaker]

That Rika girl, right?

[ She had been excited to meet a descendent! And one who could see her!! ]

[oyashiromama]

Yes. Rika and her friends need me.

[matchbreaker]

Oh yeah? You didn't really mention her friends.

[ . . . Elda may or may not be trying to "subtly" move the vodka bottle towards Hanyuu's water as she talks.

She senses Hanyuu is upset, she has not yet gathered the depths of it yet. ]

[oyashiromama]

They-

[...She pushes the vodka back towards Elda.]

They are all very unfortunate children of Hinamizawa, and Rika loves them. I can't leave them behind.

[matchbreaker]

What's so unfortunate about them?

[ She said, casually pushing the vodka back.

Mostly just to have something to do with her hands ]

[Well, pushes it back-]

Hinamizawa is a very unfortunate village, alright?

[matchbreaker]

[ Pushing it back again...!! ]

That doesn't answer anything, Hanyuu.

[oyashiromama]

I just-- [Don't get frustrated. Don't. ...She's already frustrated- she grabs the bottle and stands, slamming it on the bar. Not...hard enough to break, thankfully.]

There are problems there, okay?! I have a duty to protect them, and it's already- it's already been long enough that I've left them alone!

[matchbreaker]

Duty this and duty that, what could be so unfortunate and important at this point?!

[ Elda snaps back, frustrated ... honestly, mostly on Hanyuu's behalf. Though in no small part with the woman stonewalling her a bit ]

[oyashiromama]

...!

Don't you dare. Don't- If I don't return in time, then- then everything they've known will be destroyed in an instant! [She doesn't mean to yell. She doesn't, she's just- so frustrated, so intensely frustrated and she's only remembered around thirteen years-] I might already- be too late to fix anything- so don't you dare!

[matchbreaker]

[ Don't you dare? Don't you dare? Of course she dares! Why wouldn't she?!

Elda leaps back over the bar, landing in front of Hanyuu and past the vodka. Once there, she gets a grip on her shoulder. ]

What's that even mean?! [ She manages to hold back asking what a ghost can do at least??? ]

[oyashiromama]

[Hanyuu tries to pull away, harshly shrugging her shoulder and gritting her teeth.]

I don't- look, I- I should've just gone back to my room, I'm very tired and don't want to talk about it, alright? Not anymore.

[matchbreaker]

[ ...Elda.

... Elda is at a strange impasse here. Because she wants to shout and wants to rage and wants to throw the fact that they're friends in her face. But she... ]

We've talked about everything, Hanyuu.

[ She allows Hanyuu to break the grip, but she's saying that through her own gritted teeth, holding back fury, but also not quite... holding back how hurt she is by that ]

[oyashiromama]

[All at once, guilt crawls into her. Hanyuu's fury slinks away, leaving only this hollow pit of negativity, one she's so very used to.]

I- ...I'm sorry. It's- it's a bad day for me. I need a little time.

[Tomorrow, with the surprise deaths, won't be any better, and come Friday...]

[matchbreaker]

[ If Elda were a better, kinder person, she would smile and say something supportive. If Elda were a better, kinder person she would say that was no problem. But Elda isn't that kind and isn't that good. Elda Marker is selfish, and Elda Marker is very, very unused to putting her faith in people who aren't her family.

... When it comes down to it, after all this time, she's very unused to rejection.

So she doesn't manage any of that. Rather, she picks up the vodka, and she smacks it into her other palm ]

Then go to your room already. Wouldn't want the others to assault you with sentimentality.

[ She waves a hand. Go on, go back to your room. ]

[oyashiromama]

[On some level, Hanyuu knows she deserves that. ...Okay, on every level. Can't talk to people, to one of the ones she's told so much to, to a friend-

She looks away, stiff.]

...Alright. I'll- I'll talk to you later, okay?

[She waits...a moment, to see if anything's said, but...then she'll retreat, to think.]

[matchbreaker]

[ Nothing is said.

... but once she's pretty sure Hanyuu's gone to the stairs to go to the upper floors she throws that Vodka bottle as hard as she can against the wall, shattering it. And then stomps off herself to try and blow off some steam via other means ]
