Week 4.
And as the third week in the Vault comes to a close and the fourth week begins, the Survivors are once again down by two. Mion Sonozaki died on her own terms, and Yato died fulfilling his duty as God of Fortune in the best way that he knew how; the shrine built in the game room on Saturday stands in their memory. Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; there aren't any bodies to be found on Sunday morning. But that doesn't mean the night was uneventful - it seems something else may have brought you some newfound clarity. Or perhaps not... Once again, that spiral staircase leads farther than you remember, clear up to a previously inaccessible fourth floor. Go ahead and explore as much as you like; even if the Kingmaker sounded a bit unhappy with you last weekend, the fact remains that you're still doing what you seem to have been brought here to do. SURVIVORS REMAINING: 20 |
SUNDAY | MONDAY | TUESDAY | WEDNESDAY | THURSDAY

Go?
[The name is vaguely familiar but Bruce can't place a finger on it.]
no subject
Go.

[Sorry Mouri.]

[Mouri says that as if he had somehow botched the pronunciation before]
Othello is a play by some guy called Shakethespear, I think. I don't know much about western literature.

Also, there is a bit of an internal wince at how badly he butchered Shakespeare's name. Although he will be nice and not... point it out.]
It's also the name of a game. [...] You might know it as Reversi instead.

[how old are you bruce]
If you never heard of Go before then you for sure don't know to play. You could learn today, if you want.
[And if you're a fast learner, which he trusts you to be. Patience is not his forte]
no subject
I wouldn't mind that at all. It's always nice to pick up something new.
[You don't need to worry Mouri, Bruce is the fastest learner.]

Once they get to the Game Room Mouri realizes he has no Go pieces, and it's unlikely Bruce does too. Mouri's solution is to take as many pawns from the chessboards as possible and he gives Bruce the black ones]
Pretend these are Go pieces.
The trick with Go is to guess what your opponent's strategies could be, and counter anything they can do. It's that easy.
[Mouri gets ready to make the first move, waiting for Bruce to come to the table. Go is easy to play]
no subject
...I think it's probably best to lead by example.
[Its not that Bruce doesn't learn well from books, but he thinks Mouri is probably better at just showing him how to play this game.]

He places a pawn on the grid, near the corner]
It is easy. You may place your pieces on any intersection on the grid. The main objective is to claim as many territories as possible.
[Mouri is forced to use some of the leftover chess pieces to simulate white pawns]
If you surround your opponent's piece from all sides like this the piece is out of the game.
That is the basic gist of the game.
[He thinks. He has never explained the rules of Go before]
no subject
You mean the points? [He clarifies as he puts down a piece at another corner.] And what is a 'territory' here?
no subject
Usually the game ends when there board is divided in two or when there's an overwhelming advantage for one of the players.
Um, you will see it is easy to grasp once the game is underway.
[And so it starts. Mouri is more or less cautious, using most of his turns to place his pieces near each other as if he were trying to form a wall]
is it obvious i have no idea what is happening
[And the game begins. Bruce is... clearly not getting it yet when they start, but he does slowly come to understand with each turn that passes between them.]
This is--a capture? [He asks as he manages to surround a few of Mouri's pieces with his own.]
Handwaving is a valuable roleplaying technique
Y-Yes, that was a capture. That was a good move.
[That turned the tides onto Bruce's favor, as it ruined most of what Mouri had been trying to do. Guess he underestimated Bruce]
I thought you'd have more trouble in your first match.
The most valuable
Thank you.
[At this point its getting clear that Bruce seems to be getting the hang of it, making a clearly defensive move this time.]
It's not too complicated once I've figured out the basics. [Another small smile.] I've had to learn how to pick things up quickly when presented to me.
[Otherwise he wouldn't be able to get 3 PhDs, let alone survive while on the run.]
Re: The most valuable
[There's nothing else Mouri can do than try to stall the inevitable defeat. He may have lost but he is not entirely frustrated from that]

[Considering that he's not a doctor doctor. Just a not-doctor.]
no subject
[Mouri has no idea, he knows doctors but it isn't like he has asked them for details]
no subject
[They just need to study pretty damn hard. And do some papers or two. Stuff like that.]
