Maybe it's because he likes her; that's the simple, self-centered reason. He likes her, so he doesn't want to upset himself. But there's something else that's bothering him, and it takes him a moment to place what it is - in the end, though, it comes down to one notion, that being that she could have killed anyone she wanted.
