I had a feeling that some chemicals may have been at play here, so I paid a visit to the chemistry lab. A few bottles from the wall have been nearly emptied since I last took stock: iodine, ammonia, and acetic acid.

The latter may be of importance for this bit.

I don't know much about chemistry, but I don't think purple haze happens unless there's some serious work to create it. Maybe those chemicals were used in the bomb.

If its really iodine, it does explain the purple smoke.

Iodine, when heated, becomes a purple-colored smoke.

Vinegar's just acetic acid under a different name, and highly diluted. It would explain the smell.

When Cleansers make bombs, they generally have some gunpowder and flammable liquids since trolls don't like them. That's as far as my knowledge goes.

It doesn't exactly surprise me that chemicals would be involved here- I imagine that the moves Explosion and Selfdestruct involve chemical reactions from inside a Pokemon's body to expel that much explosive energy.
