trusthell | Week 6.

WEEK 6
The number of Survivors left is dropping at a quick pace; the King got what he wanted, for better or for worse; Tarrlok and Lynne were victims of both fate and some sort of magic that most in the Vault still don't quite understand, and Misa Amane has been executed, not for her particular brand of "justice", but for murdering two innocent people.

It's been a bad week.

However, Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; there aren't any bodies to be found on Sunday morning. But that doesn't mean the night was uneventful - it seems something else may have brought you some newfound clarity. Or perhaps not...

Once again, that spiral staircase leads farther than you remember, clear up to a previously inaccessible sixth floor. Go ahead and explore as much as you like; you've done well. You've earned it.

Of course, darling! I don't mind at all.

[Mouri hesitates, staring at the flute. He has promised himself this is the last time he'd wonder about Mettaton. He had spent weeks asking questions about him, trying to find out what kind of person Mettaton was, and he felt he was at the end of the road. Whether Mettaton would answer or not it didn't matter, because this was the last stop.

May as well make the final leap and see where it takes him]

I'm pretty sure you are who you are right now because you wanted to leave your former life behind. So I was wondering...what kind of life you had before, who you were before you turned into, well...Mettaton the star.

[He...doesn't sound bothered, exactly; just like that wasn't what he was expecting. But for what it's worth, he'll wander over and sit down on the piano bench nearby.

So if nothing else, it seems that he's at least willing to talk about it a bit?]

You aren't wrong, actually. It's not that my life was terrible or anything! But I was pretty unhappy with it. It was...boring, really, but I didn't think I had much of a choice in what I was going to do with my life, so I just...well, I just accepted it for a long time.

I was a lot more passive back then, I guess.

[Again, he doesn't seem uncomfortable with it; it's just words.]

Was there anything specific you wanted to know about?

[A boring life, huh. It's no surprise Mettaton would want to change that. Mettaton is pizazz and excitement, a boring life doesn't fit]

Well there were a couple things I was mostly interested about...let's see the first one.

If you hadn't met Alphys what would you have done with your life? If you had continued being whatever monster you were before, that's what I mean. What were you forced to do back then?

Oh, I wasn't forced to do anything! It's more that my family owned a business back there, so it was something we all did until we left. It was farming, though. Raising snails of all things.

My cousin and a mutual friend of ours always had dreams of performing - it's something we all wanted to do together someday. But they were never going to do anything about it; they weren't going to try to turn those dreams into reality, and when I was given the opportunity to do that...well, I left. I didn't think twice about it.

Raising snails? It's not surprising you ran away from that!

[Mouri definitely can't imagine Mettaton doing something like farming snails. It is an almost outlandish concept]

Oh. Well that is...their loss, I suppose. Who knows, maybe if they know how well it went for you they could try to be performers too. Maybe they were scared.

At least you took the chance to follow your dreams, but how did you meet Alphys? Did she go to buy snails or something? [Are snails the prime dish of the monster land?]

Actually, no! She used to come to Waterfall once in a while, I never really asked her why... But we met because I was trying to find other people who were just as fond of humans as I am. Humans aren't very popular in the Underground, but we both love them a lot - that's what we bonded over at the start.

[Mouri nods. So that's what Mettaton's life used to be. Mouri feels he understands Mettaton a lot better than he ever did, at least he understands his motivations and how he is as a person. The detective is finally satisfied]

I see.

I didn't think you could be so complicated but I guess I finally understand you better than I did before. It took a month but better late than never.

If you ever need anything I wouldn't mind giving you a hand. I may not be the most reliable person in this place but I could give it a try.

[Congratulations, Mouri thinks of you as a friend? That is good, it seems. So don't die, tinman, that would hurt]

[Oh. Well, that's...actually really flattering, Mouri, give him a moment- ]

One more thing, then, Detective, if it's understanding you were after - you were right in thinking that I was a vessel being possessed by another monster's soul, but wrong in assuming that I had died at any point.

That's because ghosts are monsters like anything else where I'm from.

A ghost, just that you were alive. Wow, I really wouldn't have ever guessed that specific detail. At some point I did think 'ghost' but I threw that theory out after talking to you that other time.

[Mouri is actually amused by that. Mettaton is a robot and a ghost at the same time, technically, so...]

If somehow there's also a werewolf in this place then every popular creature humans kind of believe in will be shown to exist somewhere. Not that anyone back home will ever believe I met them.
